With abnormally human-friendly temps in the 30's, the dICEHOUSE citizens crawled out of their little red cubes and visited some of the other shanty residents.

The mayor did a little bartering over at the Art Swap Shanty. In return for one of his silk-screened posters, he picked one of their Colby Poster Company letter-pressed posters. But rather than keep the mayor's offering they stuck it up on the wall, where it was promptly again swapped. You can check out a bunch of the swaps from this past weekend here. Do yourself a favor, if you are coming out to the ASP, bring a little art to swap.

Creative friend and dICEHOUSE foster-parent, Brian Ritchie brought out a new game of his invention called Yardzee, which is Yahtzee played with 4" cedar dice and a garbage can. He was kind enough to donate a set. Swing by dICEHOUSES HQ to play. But plan to spend a bit of time. The first lady reports it takes about an hour to play a full game.

The intrepid tea merchants over at Shan-Tea peddle more than just tea and teacups. Look at this spot on and reportedly delicious cookie portrait of Agent Autumn and Agent Cat. Bring out a little something to barter with Oolong John for one of his hand-crafted teacups.

Agent Jackson spent most of his weekend with our neighbors The Gunderson Family. I don't know what is going on over there. We hear noises. and when they come to visit, they ask all kinds of odd questions. Many involving the whereabouts of a mysterious Agent Penguin and Moose Man.

This happened. What is it? No one was really sure but it was pretty awesome. For about a half hour the well choreographed performance dazzled and confused shanty citizens and visitors. Speaking of dance. The Reclamation Dance Shanty was pumping all weekend. Hit 'em up on Facebook to request some jams for the weekend.

And so did this! I caught the first ASP fish of the season. For the record, Big Pun was shaking the ice when I caught it. To paraphrase Pruane2forever - "EAST COAST, FISHES!"

Looks like we are in for another weekend of great weather. Hope to see you all on the ice.

Well, the first batch of posters is complete and for a first time screen printing job, they turned out pretty darn good. Each poster comes complete with 'individual character', you know the slight imperfections (over-flooding, dry spots, all of those things that ensure your poster was pulled by a human and not a robot.)

As part of the 2009 Art Shanties Project. We set the world's record for the largest cribbage board. Gas powered ice augers were used to drill 242 holes in the frozen surface of Medicine Lake. In compliance with the MN DNR and the lake patrol, the holes were drilled 10' apart from one another in a non-linear path that circumnavigated the small community of ice houses. Players were required to move 5' pegs around the board while pulling the playing table (equipped with clothespins to keep the cards from blowing away) and the players chairs.

The GPS map above documents the path of the players of the first official game. Total miles walked = 2.8. Total playing time = 3.75 hours.

Last night, we huddled the dICEHOUSES together to listen to the only known recordings of Shackleton's danger-riddled 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. A chill crawled up my spine listening to the brave men lose all composure as they slipped into bouts of madness, song and (ghast) poetry. Imagine my surprise to capture, in these images taken in the midst of The Great Listening, these eerie images containing what look to me to be the lost souls of those valiant sailors who never returned from that most frigid of continents!

One of our closest neighbor is a bike-on-generator-powered coffee shop. These are the people I'm going to want to know when things go thunderdome. They seem like the types of people who can piece together anything. This last weekend, things were really rocking over there with some great music. We all had a great second weekend on the ice. This past Saturday and Sunday had it all: brass bands, art croquet, corn chowder, surprise visits from old friends, shadow puppets, secret poutine, an octopus, playing cribbage on a hundred year old handmade board, remote control camera, penguin wars, venison sausage, dog butchery, elephant bikes and some really nice weather. Sounds like you may be missing out on something if you don't make it out. Just a friendly reminder that the Art Shanty Projects is only open for the next couple of weekends (last day is February 14th). Dress Warm.

We all had a wonderful first weekend at the art shanty projects. Three beautiful days with three very different weather patterns. Saturday was windy as heck blowing near whiteout conditions at times. Sunday was the best kind of snowy with little or no wind and big flakes. Monday was still and sunny.

One of our visitors was MNkitemnan. His mastery of kite and camera was amazing. See that little black speck in the picture? That's his camera. His kite was up a good 60 - 75 feet. I watched him effortlessly position the camera over different sections of the Art Shanty Projects. Today, I was able to see the results on flickr. Incredible. Our Favorite Games: Checkpoint Danger!

The Mayor and I played this after finishing one of the dICEHOUSES. We were both surprised at how fun this descendant of Battleship was. In a series of specific location probes you are able to triangulate the location of your opponent's spies. The name of the game comes from the rare occurrence when your opponent's spy is on the same location as your spy. By announcing "Checkpoint Danger!" you are revealing your spy's location in an effort to capture their spy first.

If it sounds complicated, try playing it after a few (d)Icehouse Ales.

Calling All Augers! We need your help!

This year we are attempting to set the world's record for the largest cribbage board by drilling the board into the ice of Medicine Lake.

This Saturday is the big drill. While I was totally prepared to drill all of the holes myself by hand (for a double back board this would be 124 8-10"deep holes), Mr. Pitman inspired me this weekend as he waxed poetic about the song of the gas-powered augers he hears ringing (or roaring) across the lake. I'd like to hear a full symphony of gas, electric and manual ice augers singing their sweet music simultaneously this Saturday as they help me drill a full 244 hole board into the ice..

If you or anyone you know owns an auger and would like to be a part of this world record attempt, (Every driller's name will be recorded and included in the official record paperwork) please invite them to contact me at mikehaeg@gmail.com or just check in at the dICEHOUSES Shanty early on Saturday afternoon.

First official game will be played on Sunday at noon. After that the board is open for all to play. Need to learn cribbage? We'd love to teach you.

Specifics:
244 holes (if we get a couple of dozen augers, that means only 10 holes each)
Dirlled only half way through the ice (so they will stay open and as to retain integrity of the ice)

The dICEHOUSES Shanty is ready to go. All 5 dice are stocked and ready for game play. I can't wait for next weekend for all of the shanties to be open for art. We met some of the folks from the Trans-Arctic Expedition Shanty (will be staying on the ice for the entire Art Shanty Project in their upside-down ship, Oh, Hell is a favorite game over there and a new one to us, we can't wait to learn it.) and heard tell of some amazing projects that will be happening over at The Word Shanty (including loads of anagrams). More on both of those later as I will be doing my best to find out the favorite games of all of the shanty-dwellers this year.

In other news, we had an initial kickoff / birthday party for John last night. It was cold, but the company was warm.

Thanks to the whole team for helping move the shanty to the lake, especially my dad for his truck and trailer manipulation skills and Uncle Jerry for the trailer. We can't jump up and down about being done until we finish a couple of tweaks to the doors and install the solar lighting in the final two. Good thing it is supposed to be a balmy 20 degrees today. The rest of the week will be a little less tropical.

Our Favorite Games: Euchre

Euchre is a real quick trick-based trump card game that I learned from the Dahlke clan, and it rules. First, I'll blow your mind with the games eccentricies:

Only cards 9 through ace are used
Score is tallied on black-suited 4 and 6 and red-suited 4 and 6
Cards are dealt in sets of 2 and sets of 3
The hierarchy of cards in the trump suit are as follows (best to crappiest)

Right Bauer (Jack of trump suit)
Left Bauer (Jack of same color)
Ace
King
Queen
10
9

So, I'm not going to go into the complete gameplay for euchre, there are plenty of places on the web for you to go learn and play. But, I will tell you that this game is best played in person as it is a partner game. It is also a lot easier to learn than one would guess by looking at the craziness listed above. The First Lady and I will teach anyone who comes to the ASP this year, just ask.

And just in time as we are putting them out on the lake this weekend. This dicehouse has a really cozy feel with maple stain polyurethane to accent the weird spray-painted stripes that we found on this plywood from the bottom of the pile. I'm guessing that they are there to mark the quality of the lumber, but John thought they looked too cool to paint over. I figured out how to turn a couple of old exterior lights into candle sconces that will really accentuate the Den-like feel of this shanty.

These Things for Sale?

At 1:30 this afternoon I heard a knock on the porch door. I put down my bon bons and turned off my stories to see who it could be. I opened the door and found a somewhat familiar looking 60ish man on my porch. "These things for sale?" he asked.

I then went into the story of what the dICEHOUSES were, and why we were making them. I don't think he completely understood it. He said he and his wife didn't understand what the "H" and "Q" were on the main headquarters dICHOUSE (they are supposed to look like scrabble letters).

I told him he looked familiar and asked him his name. His name was John, and he lives in Shakopee (which is the first tier suburb of Mt.Holly). I explained who I was, and who Mike was. Shakopee having once been a small town, he knew both of our parents, where they currently or previously worked, what street one of them lives on, and even mentioned that he went to school with Mike's dad. We also figured out that the man lived across the street from my high school best friend. I asked him if he had heard of Mt.Holly, and he said, "Oh yes, we saw you in the paper a year ago." He thought it was pretty neat that we were trying to "make history" as he put it with making our own town.

Turns out he really didn't want to buy one; his question was merely a sort of pick-up line to start a discussion about the unusual fishhouses he had been driving by for weeks. He was impressed with the dICEHOUSES, and that we were doing something different and fun. He pointed out that it was something we could do with the family, and that he liked the idea of sitting down and playing games with the family on the ice.

I'm glad to know there are other crazies out here that will just knock on your door in the middle of winter. It's nice that there are similar small town folks in what sometimes still feels like a small town, despite the McMansions that popped up and condo's that killed the once historic downtown of Shakopee.

Well, I was going to lay in bed all day on New Years Day. I lasted until maybe 9:00. But then the scrap plywood and plexi began calling. Autumn has been dying to help out with something on the dICEHOUSES. I decided, that we should make a dog house for any of our canine friends who decide to join us on the ice. Autumn thought it sounded like a good idea as long as she could paint it. What's gonna work? Teamwork. She's a beauty with her rainbow pips and drop down portal style door. Thanks for your help, Goomba.

Nussy chose a sweet gunboat grey for #4. Total battleship style. Won't he be surprised when he sees the nautical accents that have been lurking in the Mt. Holly Junkyard.

Well, we have one building weekend left. If we would like to be out on the ice on the 10th, we are in good shape. There's rumblings that we may be joined by a SUPERBEAST bogged down with hallucinogenics and and army of Texan aliens to cinch the deal.

After a successful junket to Menards, I ventured to Fleet Farm for a 5$ ammo bucket to use for the dICEHOUSES Shanty HQ geocache, hillbilly-hot butt-button unions suits for the First Lady and my honorable self, and lucha libre and Spiderman ski-masks for the kids (also on clearance!)

It really bums me out that skimasks have such a stigmata about them. Try wearing one to the bank or on your next overseas flight and see what kinds of dirty looks you get. If the powers that be could just understand that a skimask is nothing more than a sweater for ones face, we could rid the world of frostbitten noses.

I had a few odds and ends on the dICEHOUSE wishlist that I took care of this weekend. First, off to Menards for a couple of tubes of clear silicone caulk (Thank you, anomalous 40 degree day for melting the snow and letting me know how un-watertight the shanties are.)

While I was there, I noticed some signs for 50% off all holiday decor. I headed immediately to the lighting shelves to see what solar powered items were left. Answer? Nearly all! I scored some hefty 4v 4"x4" weatherproof solar cells connected to long strings of LED rice lights that will add just the right ambiance to our shanties. This is probably more exciting for me than you, but seriously, if you want to mess around with solar panels, hit Menards ASAP before everything is gone.

Three is indeed a Magic Number.

Had a great night wrapping up our euchre tournament in dICEHOUSES Shanty #3, the HQ. My sister and her husband are in town and gave us our first taste of a full house. I have to admit, it was a bit chilly. However, when we were done playing, and opened the door, the out of doors felt about 10 degrees colder. Hmm, maybe we'll have to mount a thermometer in one of them to test that out.

Oh, we've been putting in a little extra TLC on this one. The inside is all Poly'd to retain the warmth of the bare wood. Reflective coating on the table. A RAF target adorns the ice hole. And, those vintage chrome diner racks I picked up at a garage sale years ago will be put to good use as shelves for the gamers library. Yep, this one's for players only.

KQRS A to Z

So tonight as I was stuck in Minnesota snowstorm traffic, I started freaking out about trying to finish the dICEHOUSES this weekend. I didn't understand why at first. I still have 4 weeks before I plan to put these suckers on the ice. I've averaged 1 a week and have three basically done. So why freak out?

Well, I realized that our co-pilot for this project has been has been Chub Unze's old stereo blasting a holiday tradition. Every year, classic rock KQ92 plays their entire on-air library from A to Z at the beginning of December. What does this have to do with urgency? Well, today we entered the letter "W" which means that, despite all of the songs yet to come that start with the word you (You are So Beautiful, You Really Got Me, etc.) We probably only have this last weekend to go. Urgency.

Not bad for a days work

So, I decided to do a thorough cleaning of the garage yesterday after getting #2 out. Started this morning with nothing more than a well swept and sorted workspace. And now look! #3 is done except for the front door! Felt good to kick this one out. With the learnings from the first two, everything is squaring up super-tight and quick. My pop came over to inspect the work and drop off the new saw (cuts like a Ginsu!) I'd love to put the door on tonight but tomorrow's commute is going to blow (5 hours of rain on top of snow this morning. Temps not getting above zero from here on out), so I better hit the hay a bit early.

dICEHOUSE #2 is done except for a couple of windows and the hardware. Just in time, as I am on Holiday Party duty for the next couple of nights.

Our Favorite Games: Waterworks

Since the dICEHOUSES Shanty is all about playing games, we thought that we would talk about some of the games that we like to play. (Not that we have much time for playing games right now. We still have 3 of dICEHOUSES to build and paint before January 10th!)

Waterworks is an amazingly well-crafted card came. The cards are lovingly painted depictions of all sorts of copper and lead pipes in various states of disrepair: tees, elbows, spigots and valves. They look like they may have been painted by the same person who used to paint the covers of MAD Magazine around the same period. The cards sit in a plastic bathtub (the discard pile is where the drain is!) Miniature brass monkey-wrenches act as wild cards.

Try to find one of the original 70's versions for the best color and quality.

The object of the game is to plumb together the required number of pieces to connect one's valve to one's spigot. The trick is that the pipeline can have no leaks. Players can strategicly add leaky pipes and extra paths to other players' waterlines which that player has to repair before moving forward. Copper pipes cannot be broken, thus are played as solid offencive cards or over broken lead pipes as a repair. Players also, can play one of two pipewrenches as a fix.

Nussy brought a couple of friends with him this weekend. We have one dICEHOUSE in the backyard and one in the garage thanks to the hard work and beer guzzling of Kent Carmichael and Casey Brewer Superbeast. Seriously someone should do a Jesus Christ Superstar type musical about Casey. Until then, catch his exploits on the Superbeast Blog or at Buddies and Hot Dogs. Even better give him a frikking job and watch your workplace explode with shirtless guitar noodling and bask in the lamentation of the women.

This morning, I was thinking about pulling Shanty #1 out of the garage alone. It's pretty light. But, because our drive-under garage I would have to pull it up a fair incline. If I could reduce the ground to ski friction a bit, I was sure I could pull it all by myself. If I just had some wheels. I had a stack of the 12" holes cut from the windows. By screwing 3 of them together, like a stack of pancakes, I was able to make them pretty solid. The axle is made from an old clothes rod I had thrown up into the rafters for a rainy day. And, dowel stubs from a project e couple of years ago gave me the pins to hold the whole thing together, Flintstone style. Sure enough. It worked great. I was able to move the shanty with about 1/5 the effort than just trying to push it on it's skis.

Did a little touch up today and added our DNR# to the front door. Tomorrow, we'll put on the door hardware and pull it into the back yard.

Our Favorite Games: 3M Bookcase Games

Since the dICEHOUSES Shanty is all about playing games, we thought that we would talk about some of the games that we like to play.

I love every little thing about these games: the amazing artwork, the faux-leather slipcase packaging, the weird analog playing fields, the Star Trekish plastic playing pieces, the breadth of strategic challenges.

Produced by Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (that's 3M to you squares) during the 1960's and early 1970's, bookcase games are everything one would expect from a company packed full of engineers. In fact most of the games were actually solicited freelance from its engineers and other brainiacs. I've heard, from a childhood neighbor who worked at 3M that over 600 concepts for games were presented to 3M for potential production. He also said that these games were presented within the company as Christmas gifts and special awards.

Through it's Bookcase line, 3M introduced the American market to such ancient international games of strategy as quinto, go, and mancalla. I could go into detail about all of the titles, but someone beat me to it over at The Gamepile.

These games were a big hit here in Minnesota and can be found at thrift shops and garage sales.

First game of cribbage

Today, we set 8 of the windows and painted the non-window pips. We tried out some reflective spray paint for the pips (MN DNR requires at least 2" of reflectors on each side of each ice-fishing shanty). It didn't work so well. It's probably meant for smoother surfaces. The First Lady and I called it an early night to play our first official game of cribbage. I nearly got skunked. But, you know what they say: Unlucky with cards, lucky with love.

It's been a great week. We have a garage full of lumber and plexiglass and a very naked dICEHOUSE #1!

I'll tell you what, if you aren't using craigslist to source your materials for projects like this you're nuts. Case in point, we picked up my virgin plexiglass for $2.50 a sheet. At a store, these sheets would have cost us near $40.00 a piece. We need 50 sheets. Hold on to your socks before you do the math!

Dad and I headed down to Siwek's Lumber down in Jordan on Saturday morning. Siweks is a full service lumber yard and mill that also carries surplus and salvaged wood. Took us half the time we thought it would, so I treated dad to a sack of White Castles and gave him the rest of the day off.

3.5 hours of work on Saturday and 5 hours on Sunday and we have out prototype 'finished'. Over the course of the week we'll do some painting, get our permits, and mount the windows. We should be able to moive this one out of the garage in time to start on dICEHOUSE #2 Saturday morning.

One of the great pleasures in ice fishing is spending time in close quarters with your closest friends playing cards with a beat up deck of cards that smell like an eelpout and talking and laughing.

Nowadays, we hardly sit at the same table and interact face to face with each other. As families, we eat in shifts or on the fly. We communicate more through our phones and email than we do with our own smiles, eyes and touch.. With the increasing popularity of video game systems, gameplay has become less intimate as people sit on a sofa facing the television instead of each other.

By creating 5 tiny little dicehouses designed around 2-4 people sitting close together playing games together, we hope to rekindle the warmth and art of face to face interaction and gameplay for our visitors.

Each dicehouse will be heated exclusively by the warmth of conversation and the closeness of the people within it.

So begins the epic tale of our 2009 Art Shanty Project. For those of you unfamiliar, Art Shanty Projects is a curated artist community that has sprung up on Medicine Lake for the past few winters.
